Bunnies are the low man on the totem pole in shelters nationwide!
They come in as "strays" or "owner surrenders", and they are put in tiny cages that drive them crazy, and then when they are mean and bite because they get "cage-crazy", no one wants to adopt them, and the shelters end up killing them.
It is very sad working with bunnies, and I want to make life better for them as much as I can. I have volunteered at a few shelters but the main one I volunteer at is Agoura Shelter and I make time to play with the bunnies, take them out of their cages to run and play and race in the bunny garden, I cuddle them, talk to them, groom them, clean them. If they are not looking well, I leave notes for the doctor to check them.
Once a bunny was brought in to be put down...because she was already 8 years old, and sick with a bad infection. But she was adorably sweet, and I wanted to keep her. I adopted her, took her to my vet and granted, I paid a high price to get her healthy again...but today Dottie is a great joy in my life. When the doctor did the surgery, he said she had uterine cancer (almost all bunnies will get some form of cancer if you do not spay/neuter them before about 3 years old). He removed as much of the cancer as he could, but his truthful words to me afterwards were "it's pretty ugly...and she could live 6 weeks or 6 months." This is after the surgery, that cost $3000. I hoped she would at least live the 6 months.
Dottie came home and made herself comfortable in our family room. It is 2 years later, and she is thriving. If there is any cancer left in her, it has either stopped growing, or is growing very very slowly. She shows no signs of any illness! She is amazing and sweet, a therapy bunny for the elderly and children, and goes with me everywhere. When I don't take her somewhere she will be mad at me for hours! I adore her, and have to say she was worth every penny! You can see Dottie on my Nutrition page under "greens"...where she is attempting, in her old age...to gain access to the lettuce in the huge bucket! lol!
Money donated here, goes towards medical, food and boarding for shelter and foster bunnies that I work with, no matter which shelter they are from.
